BOSTON, Mass. — Firefighters freed two men Monday afternoon after their car tore through two fences on Glen Road in Boston’s Jamaica Plain neighborhood and ended up hanging about 10 feet off the ground, pinned between a retaining wall and an occupied house.
Boston police said the crash happened shortly after 3 p.m. The Boston Fire Department said crews arrived at 28 Glen Road at about 3:15 p.m. and found the car resting with its front end pressed against the windows of the home.
The Toyota had been heading down Glen Road at too high a speed when the driver lost control. It hit a metal fence first, kept going through a wooden fence and then struck the house. Firefighters said they think the driver had a foot stuck on the gas pedal.
Pictures taken at the scene showed the car perched on top of the retaining wall after breaking through the fencing, its nose jammed into the windows of the house. The car went through both fences before it struck the building, and it came to rest wedged between the retaining wall and the home, hanging in the air above the yard. Crews braced the car from below and on both sides before helping the two men climb out, and both were brought down to safe ground. Both were checked by EMS and had only minor injuries. No one inside the house was hurt.
Early findings suggested speed may have played a role, along with the stuck pedal. A crane was brought in to lift the car away. The city Inspectional Services Department is set to inspect the home for damage, and the cause of the crash is still under investigation.
