BOSTON, Mass. — Boston firefighters pulled six people out of an Allston apartment building early Saturday as flames spread through the structure on Brainerd Road and the blaze grew to three alarms.
The call came in at about 3:45 a.m. for a building in the 100 block of Brainerd Road, close to where Allston meets Brighton. Crews pulling up found fire coming out of first-floor windows, and commanders quickly sent for more companies as firefighters went floor to floor helping tenants get out.
A 4-year-old child and a 40-year-old adult were taken to a hospital. Their conditions were not released Saturday.
Smoke was heavy enough that one resident went up to the roof to wait for help. About 20 other people got out on their own and brought their pets with them, according to the Boston Fire Department. Six more needed firefighters to bring them out.
A fire deputy at the scene said at least 38 people were left without a place to stay as the morning went on. Fire trucks lined the surrounding streets during the overnight response, and residents stood outside as crews worked to knock down the flames.
By the numbers, the overnight fire sent two people to a hospital, required six rescues by firefighters, left one person waiting on the roof and pushed about 20 others and their animals out onto the street on their own. The displaced tenants will need somewhere else to stay while the building is assessed for damage from fire, smoke and water.
Investigators had not said what started the fire or how badly the building was damaged. The cause remains under investigation by the Boston Fire Department.
