BOSTON, Mass. — The Boston Bruins have a new governor for the first time in more than half a century. The team said Wednesday that Jeremy Jacobs, who has held the post for 51 years, is handing it to his son, Bruins CEO Charlie Jacobs, effective right away.

As governor, he now holds Boston’s vote in the league’s owners group, the NHL Board of Governors, which sets league policy. Charlie Jacobs already runs the team day to day and is widely seen as the public face of ownership. He has also sat on that board for more than 20 years as an alternate governor.

The elder Jacobs called the move a natural next step in the family’s succession plan and said he trusts his son completely. Charlie Jacobs said he plans to build on his father’s legacy and expects to keep leaning on him as a mentor.

The family has owned the Bruins for 51 years, and Jeremy Jacobs has already passed ownership of the club on to his children. In his new seat, Charlie Jacobs will work alongside board chairman Ted Leonsis, vice chair Murray Edwards and Commissioner Gary Bettman.

League leaders praised the outgoing governor’s long run. Bettman said Jeremy Jacobs left a lasting mark on hockey through his work for the team, the NHL and the city, and said Bruins fans can feel good about the club under the next generation of the family.

For fans at TD Garden, little changes day to day, since Charlie Jacobs has already been the ownership voice of the team for years.

The Bruins open each home stand at TD Garden with the same leadership group in the front office, now with Charlie Jacobs holding both the CEO and governor titles.
