The MetroWest Symphony Orchestra (MSO) is known for bringing together both professional and volunteer musicians who share a passion for symphonic music. The “Musical Potpourri” Event

The “Musical Potpourri” concert is scheduled for January 25 at 2:00 PM at Dwight Hall. This performance promises a diverse selection of music, designed to offer “something for everyone.” Under the direction of Max Hobart, the orchestra will present a program that showcases their versatility and the broad appeal of orchestral music.

Dwight Hall: A Hub for Arts and Education

The concert venue, Dwight Hall, is located on the campus of Framingham State University in Framingham, Massachusetts. Dwight Hall’s Christa McAuliffe Auditorium serves as a modern performance center, renovated to accommodate various artistic and educational needs. This state-of-the-art facility, with its 500-seat capacity, supports not only university events but also professional and community-based musical performances, lectures, and more. The orchestra began a new collaboration as the Orchestra-in-Residence at Framingham State University in 2024-2025, suggesting a beneficial private-public partnership that enhances community resources.

A Legacy of Local Leadership and Adaptation

The MetroWest Symphony Orchestra’s roots trace back to Framingham in 1973, initially rehearsing and performing at the Framingham Civic League. Over the years, the organization adapted, moving to Marlborough in 1980 with support from the Mayor and the Office of Cultural Affairs, and later incorporating. The name change to MetroWest Symphony Orchestra in 2002 better reflected the diverse population it serves across the region. This history demonstrates a responsive and proactive approach to organizational growth and community engagement, driven by local leadership and initiative. Emerging from challenges like the COVID-19 pandemic, the MSO regrouped in 2021 under the leadership of Max Hobart, showcasing resilience in the face of adversity.

Fostering the Next Generation of Musicians

Beyond performances, the MSO is dedicated to educational outreach. The orchestra initiated a relationship with Natick High School in 2018, aiming to provide symphony performance opportunities for capable high school students in the MetroWest region. They offer special support for string students, including summer non-performance string playing sessions. Such programs exemplify personal initiative within the community to cultivate artistic talent and ensure the continuity of musical appreciation. The MSO also recruits new players across all sections, welcoming inquiries from those who play orchestral instruments, fostering ongoing participation from local residents who love music.
