News Summary

The Boston Police Detectives Union demands a bias-free investigation into the arrests of city employees Marwa Khudaynazar and Chulan Huang. Following a serious domestic dispute, Khudaynazar faces charges for assaulting a police officer which raise concerns about her role in law enforcement. Both have pleaded not guilty and their actions are prompting calls for accountability and reforms in city governance.

Boston – The Boston Police Detectives Union is calling for a “bias-free” investigation into a serious incident involving two city employees, Marwa Khudaynazar and Chulan Huang, both of whom have been placed on unpaid leave following their arrests in Chinatown early Thursday morning. Khudaynazar, 27, faces charges of assault and battery on a police officer and assault and battery on a household member stemming from the incident that reportedly occurred during a domestic dispute.

According to allegations, during the confrontation, Khudaynazar is accused of pushing an officer’s hand away and striking the officer’s chest. Witnesses report that she also directed aggressive language towards the police as they responded to the scene. These accusations are particularly troubling given Khudaynazar’s role in public office, which carries significant responsibilities, especially concerning law enforcement.

Both Khudaynazar and Huang, 26, a business manager, have entered not guilty pleas at Boston Municipal Court. Initial investigations indicate that the altercation originated from a date Khudaynazar had with Huang’s boss, an arrangement Huang claims was used to provoke him. Huang alleges that the outing was a form of humiliation following his claim that Khudaynazar and his boss had booked a hotel room together, which he interpreted as a response to an alleged infidelity on his part.

Details from police reports reveal that during the confrontation, Huang attempted to restrain Khudaynazar, who reportedly responded by biting and punching him. Officers arrived to find Huang with multiple bite marks on his chest and arms while Khudaynazar was yelling and asking to be released. The investigation remains ongoing, examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.

The charges against Khudaynazar trouble the union, which has specifically requested that the proceedings be conducted without prejudice. They have cited concerns around how Khudaynazar’s position as Chief of Staff for Police Accountability might sway perceptions about the police and their operations, potentially impacting the livelihoods of officers in the city.

This incident has drawn significant public concern, leading City Councilor Ed Flynn to demand the dismissal of both employees. Flynn has emphasized that assaulting a Boston police officer is deeply unacceptable and has called for an independent investigation into the workplace culture within the involved city departments.

Mayor Michelle Wu has also expressed her distress over the allegations, stating it is imperative for city employees to meet community standards and maintain an environment of mutual respect and accountability. The seriousness of the situation underscores a pressing need for reforms and vigilant practices in workplace relations among public officials.

Khudaynazar, with an annual salary reported at $83,769.77, and Huang, who made $70,469.22 last year, have had their biographical information removed from the city’s online resources in light of the investigation.

As this case unfolds, both city officials and union representatives are paying close attention to its implications. It signals not only the need for transparent investigations in cases involving public figures but also an opportunity to reassess the interrelations within city departments to foster a more accountable atmosphere. The investigation will play a crucial role in shaping public trust and confidence in city governance as it progresses.
