Abstract representation of the impacts of domestic violence on vulnerable individuals, emphasizing the need for protection.

News Summary

Dana Young, a 33-year-old man from Randolph, faces multiple assault charges after a brutal attack on a pregnant woman in Roxbury. The attack, which occurred after the victim exited an MBTA bus, has raised serious health concerns for her unborn child, who was 17 weeks along at the time. The Suffolk District Attorney emphasized the brutality of the assault, as Young faces charges including assault with a dangerous weapon and violating a restraining order. The victim’s health risks highlight the severe implications of domestic violence.

Roxbury, Massachusetts – Dana Young, a 33-year-old man from Randolph, has been charged with multiple counts of assault following a brutal attack on a pregnant woman that occurred on April 29, 2023. The incident has raised significant concerns about the health of the victim’s unborn child, who was 17 weeks gestation at the time of the assault.

According to police reports, the assault took place around 6:30 p.m. on Winthrop Street after the victim had exited an MBTA bus. Young allegedly approached the 23-year-old woman from behind, slapped her across the head and knocked her to the ground. After she fell, Young reportedly kicked her in the stomach several times before fleeing the scene towards Blue Hill Avenue.

Initially, the victim refused medical treatment at the scene, however, she soon became concerned for her child’s wellbeing and sought medical attention at Tufts Medical Center. Doctors informed her that due to the nature of the assault, she would not be able to carry the child to full term, and there were significant risks of brain damage stemming from the kicks sustained during the attack, which included the ingestion of blood.

In response to the severity of the assault, Dana Young faces serious charges, including assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, assault and battery in violation of a restraining order, and assault and battery on a pregnant victim. Authorities have indicated that the investigation is ongoing and further charges could be added as additional details emerge.

The Suffolk District Attorney, Kevin Hayden, has characterized the allegations against Young as “shocking in their brutality and violence,” reflecting the community’s outrage over such an incident. During Young’s arraignment, a judge revoked his bail from a previous case, ordering him to be held for at least 60 days. Furthermore, a bail of $2,000 was set for the new charges, along with a no-contact order preventing Young from approaching the victim.

Young is not a stranger to legal trouble, having faced prior allegations that have raised red flags about his behavior. This incident is reportedly not being classified as a random attack, which adds to the ongoing concerns regarding the safety of those affected by Young’s actions. His next court date has been scheduled for June 3, when a pre-trial hearing will take place.

The victim’s harrowing experience underscores the implications of domestic violence and its potential to affect not just the immediate parties involved, but also unborn children. Medical professionals continue to advise victims of domestic violence to seek immediate help to ensure their safety and the wellbeing of their families.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains watchful, with many advocating for better protections for victims of violence and increased support systems for those at risk. The case has instigated important conversations regarding the health risks posed to pregnant women and the necessity of legal frameworks to address these types of assaults effectively.
