Boston – The Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) announced that Green Line service through downtown Boston will be suspended starting Wednesday night at 8 p.m. and will continue through Sunday night. This temporary halt in service is part of planned maintenance work aimed at ensuring the infrastructure remains in peak operating condition, which involves inspections, adjustments, and repairs. All four branches of the Green Line will be affected by this suspension.
During this period, shuttle buses will replace trains at various stations. Specifically, the B Line will not operate between Babcock Street and North Station. Meanwhile, the C and D Lines will see trains suspended from Kenmore to North Station. Additionally, the E Line will be suspended from Heath Street to North Station. To assist riders during the closure, free shuttle buses will run between Babcock Street and Back Bay stations. Accessible vans will also be available for all Green Line stops between Copley and North Station.
As part of the mitigation measures, trains at Kenmore and all open surface-level stops heading west toward Boston College, Cleveland Circle, and Riverside will be free throughout the closure. The Route 57 bus, which connects Kenmore Square and Packard’s Corner, will also operate free of charge. Furthermore, the Worcester Commuter Rail Line will provide fare-free service between South Station, Back Bay, and Lansdowne stations during this maintenance period. Shuttle buses will run between Kenmore and Back Bay for both the C and D Lines, and the Route 39 bus will replace E Line trains between Heath Street and Back Bay without any fare.
This closure follows previous maintenance work that was conducted in January 2023, as part of the MBTA’s initiative to eliminate slow zones on the subway lines. In the past year, maintenance efforts have removed 16 speed restrictions on the Green Line, impacting travel times positively for riders. The MBTA recommends that riders subscribe to T-Alerts or follow the updates on their official communications channels to stay informed about additional service changes.
The Green Line isn’t the only service facing maintenance-related disruptions. Other T lines will also experience service changes throughout the month of June. The Red Line is scheduled to suspend train service during the weekend of June 14 between Braintree and JFK/UMass, with free shuttle buses replacing train operations. Additionally, the Orange Line will be affected on weekends of June 21 and 28 between North Station and Forest Hills, with shuttle bus replacements in service. The Blue Line will have train service replaced by shuttle buses between Bowdoin and Orient Heights from June 7 to June 15. Lastly, service on the Framingham/Worcester commuter rail line will be suspended between Framingham and South Station from June 20 to June 22, with a diversion schedule provided on the MBTA’s website, which will include free shuttle bus service from Framingham to the Green Line’s D Line stop at Riverside.
Riders are advised to plan for extended travel times and alternative routes during these planned service interruptions as the MBTA works to ensure the safety and reliability of its services.
