Attention, Boston Commuters: Red Line Service Suspension Coming Up!
Hey there, fellow Bostonians! If you’re a regular rider of the Red Line, we’ve got some important news coming your way. Get ready for some adjustments in your travel plans because the beloved Red Line is taking a little break for maintenance work soon. Mark your calendars for July 10 to 13 and again from July 17 to 20. That’s right, no rides from Kendall/MIT to JFK/UMass during those times!
When Does It Start?
The first round of service suspension kicks off on Thursday, July 10, around 8:30 PM, and lasts until Sunday, July 13. But don’t put your feet up just yet because this isn’t just a one-time event! The second round is set to begin on Thursday, July 17, again at around 8:30 PM, continuing through to Sunday, July 20. So, plan your evening and weekend outings accordingly!
Shuttle Buses to the Rescue
While the trains are out of commission, never fear! Shuttle buses will be stepping in to save the day, replacing train service between the affected stations—except for our common gathering point, Park Street. However, anticipate that using these shuttles might add an extra 30 to 45 minutes to your travel time, so be sure to budget more time for your commute!
Great News on Fares!
Here’s a bright spot: during this disruption, no fares will be collected at the JFK/UMass, Kendall/MIT, Haymarket, State, and South Station stops. That’s right! Free rides for everyone at those stations!
Commuter Rail Perks
And if you plan to venture farther, you’ll be glad to know that commuter rail service will be fare-free between South Station and Braintree, as well as between Porter and North Station. You can hop on and off without worrying about your pockets getting lighter during this time!
Accessible Travel
Don’t worry if you require special assistance; accessible shuttle services will be available at all stations—just not at Park Street. Look out for extra help if you need it!
Detours to Keep in Mind
For those who wish to connect with other lines, you can easily detour to the State and Haymarket stations for connections to the Orange and Blue lines. Make sure to give yourself plenty of time to navigate these connections!
Why All the Fuss?
You might wonder why the Red Line is taking a hiatus. Well, it’s because a little TLC is essential for its safety and efficiency. Maintenance work will include inspections, adjustments, and repairs to keep our trains running as smoothly as possible for all riders. We’ve got to keep our systems up and running!
Fun Alternatives While You Wait
If you’re looking for something fun to do while the trains are down, remember that the Boston Parks and Recreation Department is cooking up loads of summer fun! They’ve got free Arts & Crafts Workshops for kids aged 3 to 10 running all summer long. Plus, don’t miss the summer concerts happening every Wednesday at the golf course clubhouses! And if you fancy a bit of exercise, the Dorchester Running Club is hosting a Summer Run Series every Thursday evening where you can jog a 3-mile run or take a leisurely 1.5-mile walk, followed by some socializing at local spots.
Don’t Forget to Plan Ahead!
So, whether you’re commuting to work or heading out for some summer fun, just remember to plan ahead for the Red Line suspensions. Stay informed, travel safe, and have a fantastic summer, Boston!
