News Summary

A group of alumni from the University of Massachusetts Boston will participate in the Boston Marathon to raise funds for the Krystle Campbell Scholarship Fund. This fund honors Krystle Campbell, who lost her life in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, and supports women pursuing business degrees. The team aims to raise awareness and funds while honoring the victims of the tragic attack, showcasing their dedication to empowering future business leaders.

Boston – A team of alumni from the University of Massachusetts Boston will participate in the Boston Marathon on April 21 to raise funds for the Krystle Campbell Scholarship Fund, honoring the memory of Krystle Campbell, who was tragically killed in the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing. This year marks a pivotal moment for the scholarship, which has raised over $1 million since its inception, aimed at empowering women pursuing degrees in business.

The scholarship is offered to students in the College of Management at UMass Boston, providing valuable financial assistance to those in need. Six alumni runners are gearing up for the marathon: Shahnawaz Anwar, Ananta Chakravartula, Paul Dyson, Katie Gauthier, Rhonda Hodge, and Natalia Rosero. Each participant must raise a minimum of $6,500 to contribute to the scholarship fund and secure their spot in the historic race.

As of now, the team has collectively raised just over $13,500 through the fundraising platform GiveCampus, showcasing their commitment to this important cause. Paul Dyson, a faculty member and UMass Boston alumnus, has highlighted the significance of this charitable endeavor, underscoring its personal importance. Dyson also brings a unique perspective as he served in the Massachusetts National Guard during the response to the bombing on that fateful day in April.

On April 15, 2013, Krystle Campbell was one of three people killed in the bombing, an event that left a deep scar on the community and resulted in over 500 injuries. This tragic incident marked the largest terrorist attack on U.S. soil since September 11, 2001, and the subsequent manhunt led to additional fatalities, including MIT police officer Sean Collier and Boston Police Sgt. Dennis Simmonds.

The marathon runners are currently training primarily individually, but they gather occasionally for motivation, culminating their preparation with a final long training run on campus prior to race day. Participating as a charity runner offers an opportunity for individuals who do not meet the time qualifications for the marathon to still take part in this prestigious event. This year, the team not only hopes to complete the race but also to continue raising awareness and funds that will honor the victims of the bombing.

The 2013 Boston Marathon bombing was a coordinated attack that involved two terrorists, one of whom died while fleeing the scene, while the other was sentenced to death in 2015 after being convicted of 30 charges. The surviving bomber currently remains on death row, facing ongoing legal battles regarding his trial and sentencing.

The Krystle Campbell Scholarship Fund continues to serve as a lasting legacy for the victims, providing educational opportunities designed to empower women in business. As the alumni team gears up for marathon day, they not only embrace the challenge of running the iconic race but also commit themselves to making a meaningful impact in the lives of future business leaders in honor of those lost during the tragic attack.
