News Summary

Boston Mayor Michelle Wu hosted Mayor Simone Costanzo of Coreno Ausonio, Italy, during an official visit, celebrating cultural and climate connections. The two mayors exchanged gifts, highlighting international cooperation. The event drew attention from local officials and Wu’s family, emphasizing ongoing community ties. With the backdrop of climate initiatives, the meeting showcases the importance of global partnerships in addressing shared challenges.

Boston – On Wednesday, Mayor Michelle Wu of Boston welcomed Mayor Simone Costanzo of Coreno Ausonio, Italy, during an official visit at City Hall. This meeting marked the conclusion of Costanzo’s trip to the United States and Canada, highlighting the deep cultural and climate ties between the two cities.

In a brief ceremony held in Wu’s office, the two mayors exchanged gifts, emphasizing the importance of international cooperation and community building. Wu presented Costanzo with a decorative blue pitcher from a navy-blue bag embellished with a golden seal. In return, Costanzo gifted Wu a commemorative plaque, cap, and framed photograph, symbolizing the mutual respect and friendship between their municipalities.

The event was attended by various city officials, leaders from Boston’s North End – which is known for its Italian heritage – and Wu’s family members, including her husband, Conor Pewarski. Notably, Pewarski has family roots in Coreno Ausonio, located approximately 75 miles southwest of Rome. This personal connection added richness to the cultural exchange and was evident as Wu’s children interacted with attendees, creating a lively atmosphere filled with hugs, kisses, and handshakes.

Also present at the ceremony was Anthony D. Biasiotta, Mayor of Seven Hills, Ohio, which is a sister city to Coreno Ausonio. Biasiotta had previously welcomed Costanzo in his city prior to their visit to Boston. During their exploration of the North End, Biasiotta expressed the strong sense of hospitality found in Boston, noting the shared values that exist despite differences in the size of their cities.

Wu’s connection to Coreno Ausonio deepened during her visit in May 2024, where she met her husband’s relatives and delved into her family history. During that trip, she also attended a climate conference held at the Vatican, where she was the only American mayor participating in discussions focused on addressing the global climate crisis.

Boston is currently in the process of implementing its climate action plan, which aims to guide the city over the next five years. This plan has been shaped with community feedback and incorporates best practices learned from around the world. Wu had pledged to reduce the city’s carbon emissions and bolster resilience against climate change during her campaign, recognizing the urgency of the issue and the necessity for immediate action.

With the rising global tensions, Wu emphasized that such meetings are crucial in creating connections that transcend geographical boundaries. The intimacy of the gathering and the cultural exchange underscore the global commitment to fostering partnerships that can contribute to shared objectives, particularly in addressing pressing issues like climate change. Biasiotta reaffirmed that the mayors’ meeting symbolizes a commitment to unity between cities across continents.

As Costanzo and Biasiotta explored Boston’s renowned North End, their visit and engagement with local leaders signal a growing interest in strengthening international ties, which could yield collaborative opportunities for cultural and environmental initiatives. The joint efforts between Boston and Coreno Ausonio represent a key step in solidifying relationships that can benefit both communities and contribute to a collective approach in tackling global challenges.
