Holyoke, Massachusetts — Scott McGinley, a 55-year-old librarian, has been arrested on charges related to child pornography. McGinley, who had worked at both Williams Middle School and Glenbrook Middle School in Longmeadow, faces one count of distribution of child pornography, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Massachusetts. The case has raised significant concerns in the community regarding the safety and well-being of students.
Investigators began looking into McGinley after receiving allegations of him distributing child sexual abuse material through a group known as “Little boyz only” on an encrypted messaging platform. Undercover law enforcement officers engaged with him on the app, posing as users. Throughout these conversations, McGinley reportedly shared alarming details about his sexual preferences, indicating an attraction to young boys aged 2 to 12, particularly those between the ages of 4 and 7. He also mentioned having “students” aged 11 to 14, albeit he claimed not to have acted on any inappropriate urges.
On August 8, investigators executed a search warrant at McGinley’s home, where they collected various digital devices including two iPhones, an Apple Watch, a tablet, and two laptops. During the search, authorities discovered a locked Pelican case in his basement, which contained numerous items deemed suitable for young children, such as assorted children’s clothing, a Santa costume, diapers, diaper cream, and applesauce packets. The case also contained a toolbox filled with boys’ underwear and bedding. These findings have contributed to growing concerns around the accusations against him.
Forensic analysis of McGinley’s phone revealed over 100 files that contained child sexual abuse material. Additional examinations of his other devices are still in progress, potentially uncovering further evidence of illicit activities. McGinley is scheduled to appear before a judge in U.S. District Court in Boston.
The Longmeadow Public Schools Superintendent characterized the situation as “highly troubling and disturbing,” reflecting the community’s shock and concern over these revelations. In light of the incident, the school district is taking proactive measures by cooperating fully with law enforcement investigations. Additionally, they have reached out to the Massachusetts Department of Children and Families (DCF) to ensure all necessary steps are taken to protect students.
To support those affected by this troubling news, counseling and resources will be provided for both students and staff. The school district aims to foster a safe and supportive environment during this challenging time.
If convicted, McGinley could face a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, along with other potential penalties. As the legal proceedings unfold, the community remains vigilant in addressing the implications of these serious charges.
