Boston—Local resident Adam Bigelow embarked on an ambitious biking journey to 92 Dunkin’ locations across Greater Boston on Friday, aiming to raise money and awareness for multiple sclerosis (MS). His motivation for this journey is deeply personal; his girlfriend, Lily Fenton, was diagnosed with MS last summer, prompting Bigelow to take action in support of her and others affected by the condition.
Bigelow began his ride at 4:30 a.m. in East Boston, covering an 80-mile route that included various neighborhoods such as Charlestown, Downtown Boston, the Seaport, South Boston, Dorchester, Hyde Park, West Roxbury, Roslindale, Jamaica Plain, the South End, Back Bay, Fenway, Allston, and Brighton. He planned to finish his ride before 7 p.m., the closing time of the last Dunkin’ location on his route.
By 10 a.m., he had already surpassed his fundraising goal of $5,000, which he had initially set at $3,000. His fundraising efforts are in preparation for the upcoming Bike MS charity ride later this month, a significant event that will take participants from Quincy to Cape Cod. Following the ride, Bigelow expressed optimism about the success of his fundraising efforts and encouraged further donations.
Throughout the day, Bigelow received enthusiastic support from Dunkin’ employees at various locations, where they greeted him with cheers and encouraging signs. At his final stop in Chestnut Hill, he received a special surprise from Dunkin’. In addition to raising awareness, Bigelow sampled a munchkin at every Dunkin’ stop, which contributed to a total of over 5,000 calories consumed during his ride. Coincidentally, National Donut Day added a festive element to his quest.
Dunkin’ recognized Bigelow’s efforts by providing him with over $1,000 in gift cards to distribute to those who spotted him on his journey or made donations to his cause. Along with the community’s support, friends and supporters accompanied him throughout the ride, greatly boosting his morale as he progressed through the challenging course.
One of the franchise owners, Dean Alepede, expressed his support for the event, sharing a personal connection to MS through a family member, emphasizing the strong community bond surrounding this cause.
Bigelow has actively documented his biking adventure on social media, sharing updates with his over 20,000 Instagram followers. His journey not only aims to raise funds but also serves to increase awareness about the impact of multiple sclerosis and the importance of community support for those affected by the disease.
In summary, Adam Bigelow’s dedication to raising awareness for MS through his biking journey across Greater Boston reflects both personal commitment and an inspiring call to action for the community. His efforts, compounded by local support and enthusiastic participation, highlight the significant role of local initiatives in addressing health challenges.
