Boston Offers Free Summer Fun: Events from July 28 to August 3

Boston residents can take advantage of the final days of summer with a variety of free events and activities taking place from July 28 to August 3. This week features seven engaging and no-cost options for individuals and families to enjoy, fostering community and creativity.

Seaport Sketch Event

One key highlight is the Seaport Sketch Event, scheduled for July 29 from 5-7 p.m. at The Superette Courtyard located at 131 Seaport Blvd. The event features local illustrator SOEMS leading a sketching session accompanied by music from DJ Troy Frost. Participants will receive complimentary sketchpads and drawing tools, welcoming both novice and seasoned artists.

Capoeira Classes

On Wednesdays from 6:30-7:30 p.m., residents can join Capoeira Classes at Speare Diamond within the Northeastern University campus. Boston Capoeira Brasil offers free beginner classes perfect for those new to the art form. Classes will include warm-ups, paired training, and conclude with a traditional “Roda,” an interactive circle that showcases Capoeira moves.

Jazz in the Park

On July 31 from 6:30-8 p.m., the Jazz in the Park event will take place at the Rose Kennedy Greenway, located at the intersection of Cross and Hanover streets. Attendees can enjoy a live performance by Albino Mbie, who fuses Afro-pop and jazz for a vibrant musical experience.

Night at the Museum

Later on the same day, from 5-9 p.m., the Night at the Museum event will grace the Harvard Art Museums at 32 Quincy St., Cambridge. Participants can enjoy DJ music, a scavenger hunt, painting and coloring activities, along with guided tours of various art galleries, making it a culturally enriching evening.

Funk and Games

August 2 from 3-5 p.m. will see the Funk and Games activity at Seven Hills Park in Davis Square, Somerville. This family-friendly event will showcase four different music acts performing enjoyable tunes, alongside games like giant Jenga and Connect Four. Additionally, local vendors will be present selling Salvadoran food and Vietnamese drinks, providing a taste of local flavor.

Family Day Rodeo Event

On August 3, from 1-6 p.m., the Family Day Rodeo Event will take place at Reverend Loesch Family Park on 20 Wainwright St. Activities include a live DJ, mechanical bull rides, bouncy houses, face painting, and rodeo-themed photo booths. A runway competition for cowboy attire themed around Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” promises to add a unique twist to the festivities. With all activities offered for free, food trucks will also be available serving Caribbean cuisine, soul food, ice cream, and lemonade.

Additional Information

Although the MIT Open Space Programming’s PLAY+ event was postponed due to a heat advisory, Boston residents are encouraged to submit information regarding free events and special offers to the city, provided they give at least a 10-day notice. This initiative aims to keep the community informed about affordable engagement opportunities.

Conclusion

These events represent just a fraction of the free activities available in Boston during the last week of July and early August. Whether you’re an art lover, a music enthusiast, or looking for fun activities for the family, this week promises something for everyone to enjoy without spending a dime.
