Boston residents have recently been rocked by news of a significant crackdown on illegal gun sales, with eighteen Brazilian nationals facing serious charges. This situation has unfolded following a year-long federal investigation led by the U.S. Attorney’s Office into firearm trafficking in several communities across Massachusetts.
In total, over 100 firearms have been seized during this extensive operation. The investigation came to light as authorities uncovered the disturbing connections between these illegal activities and notorious gang-related factions. These include ties to the infamous transnational criminal organization, Primeiro Comando da Capital (PCC), as well as local street gangs like Tropa de Sete and Trem Bala.
This is no small matter. The PCC, which originally formed in the prison systems of São Paulo, Brazil, is notorious for being one of the largest and most dangerous criminal groups in not just Brazil but all of Latin America. Members of this organization are implicated in a myriad of violent crimes, including murders, armed robberies, kidnappings, and facilitating transnational drug trafficking operations.
Authorities discovered that the firearms in question were largely trafficked from Florida and South Carolina into Massachusetts. Among the 110 firearms seized were handguns, rifles, short-barreled rifles, and shotguns—tools that could easily escalate street violence in our neighborhoods.
It’s worth noting that many of the defendants charged are currently in the U.S. illegally, which has raised additional concerns within the community. The areas most affected by these illegal sales include Boston itself, Chelsea, Revere, Everett, Malden, Weymouth, Framingham, Marlboro, Plymouth, and Yarmouth.
