Following this sweltering Thursday, a slight respite is expected for Friday, but more heat is forecasted for the weekend.
Boston is poised to experience its first 90-degree day of the year on Thursday, June 19, 2025. This significant rise in temperature comes along with a heat advisory issued by the National Weather Service for much of Southern New England, excluding the South Coast. The advisory is set to take effect from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., as temperatures are projected to range between 90 and 95 degrees Fahrenheit, contributing to a heat index that may feel like 100 degrees or more.
The increase in heat is expected to be accompanied by very muggy conditions, with dew points climbing into the 70s. Residents were on the brink of 90 degrees just last Thursday when Boston recorded a high of 89 degrees. This marks the second consecutive week of sweltering weather as the region approaches the peak of summer heat.
As the temperatures soar, several areas in Southeastern New Hampshire and much of Southern New England are under heat risk alerts. Health authorities warn that high heat and humidity can pose risks, especially for vulnerable populations, including the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions. Residents are advised to take precautions, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activities during the hottest parts of the day.
In addition to the heat, there is a risk of afternoon and evening thunderstorms, particularly in areas west of Boston. The Storm Prediction Center has categorized most of central and western Massachusetts under a “slight” risk for severe weather as an approaching cold front may trigger these storms.
The anticipated thunderstorms may bring heavy downpours, frequent lightning strikes, small hail, and damaging winds. There is also a small chance of isolated tornadoes, making it essential for residents to remain vigilant throughout the day. After a scorching Thursday, Boston is set to enjoy a brief respite from the heat on Friday. Lower humidity is anticipated, offering some relief to residents. However, humidity is once again projected to rise over the weekend. Looking ahead, the upcoming week is likely to bring more dangerous heat with temperatures rising into the 90s on Monday and Tuesday. During this stretch, “feels-like” temperatures could exceed 100 degrees once again, posing continued heat safety concerns.
By Wednesday, a wind shift is predicted, which should bring some relief, particularly along the coast where high temperatures are expected to be in the 80s, creating more comfortable conditions.
Traditionally, Boston’s weather begins to heat up in mid-June. In 2024, the city’s first 90-degree day occurred one day earlier, on June 18, and the area recorded a total of 12 days at or above 90 degrees throughout the year. As climate patterns shift, residents have become familiar with longer and more intense heat waves, making this year’s early heat day a noteworthy occurrence.
