A family gathers at Boston Harbor to honor their loved ones during a poignant memorial ceremony.
A poignant memorial took place in Boston Harbor as Man-Hee scattered the ashes of her late husband, Karl, alongside their son, Sebastian, who passed away in 2008. This tradition of honoring their memories continues every year, symbolizing their enduring family bonds amidst grief. The ceremony featured emotional tributes, prayers, and a gathering of family members, highlighting the importance of remembrance and love in the face of loss.
Boston – A poignant memorial took place recently as Man-Hee returned to Boston Harbor to scatter the ashes of her late husband, Karl Heinz-Schwarte, alongside those of their only son, Sebastian. This heartfelt reunion on June 13 marks a continuation of a ritual that began following Sebastian’s untimely death in 2008 at the age of 32.
Sebastian passed away due to a cardiac event at Massachusetts General Hospital, where he was serving as a postdoctoral fellow in cancer research. He found solace in Boston Harbor, a place that held special meaning for him, particularly after catching a bluefish there, an accomplishment he cherished. In honor of him, his parents spread his ashes in the harbor and marked the exact coordinates of the spot.
Since that heartbreaking day, Karl and Man-Hee made it a tradition to return every year on the anniversary of Sebastian’s death. They would gather at the same location to drop flowers into the water. The ferry crew, aware of their poignant ritual, would commemorate the moment by ringing a slow, mournful bell as a sign of respect.
Sadly, Karl, 79, collapsed during a swim in Germany just months before the latest ceremony, compounding the family’s grief. Following his death, Man-Hee felt compelled to return to Boston not only to honor their son but also to reunite the ashes of her husband and son in the harbor’s waters. The memorial was planned for June 15, coinciding with Father’s Day and their 52nd wedding anniversary, however, scheduling conflicts necessitated an adjustment to June 13.
On this solemn occasion, Man-Hee chartered a boat named the Timeless, accompanied by a dozen family members, including a niece. She carried Karl’s ashes in a sleek black urn, while heartfelt musical tributes featuring some of Karl and Sebastian’s favorite songs accompanied the ceremony.
At the designated spot in the harbor where Sebastian’s ashes had been scattered years earlier, Man-Hee gently relinquished Karl’s ashes into the waters while “Time to Say Goodbye” resonated in the background. The ceremony included the placement of Karl’s black tie—worn during Sebastian’s memorial service—alongside a bouquet of roses and heartfelt messages from family members. Man-Hee’s sister-in-law, a pastor, offered prayers in Korean, adding a spiritual touch to the occasion.
Following the poignant ceremony, the family gathered at The Helmand restaurant in Cambridge to reminisce and celebrate the lives of Karl and Sebastian. The atmosphere blended laughter and tears as they shared stories, preserving the treasured memories of the past.
Man-Hee expressed her commitment to continue this tradition, indicating a plan to return to Boston annually in June and September to honor the memories of her husband and son by dropping flowers at their resting place in the harbor. She expressed a profound sense of peace with the reunion of their ashes, emphasizing her hope of one day joining them in the waters.
This yearly ritual not only serves as a tribute to Karl and Sebastian, but it also symbolizes the enduring bonds of love and family, inspiring other families to reflect on their connections and cherish their memories.
