Police Investigation Underway at Boston’s Carson Beach

Boston – A significant police investigation is currently underway at Carson Beach, following a series of incidents that unfolded on Monday morning. Authorities have established a notable presence in the area, particularly near William J. Day Boulevard, where yellow crime scene tape surrounds a vehicle under scrutiny. Multiple cruisers from both the state and Boston police are actively participating in the investigation, although no patients have been transported by Boston EMS in connection with the incident.

This incident follows a separate tragedy involving a police officer from Osage Beach in Missouri. Officer Phylicia Carson, who had just joined the Osage Beach Police Department in June 2023, lost her life in a car crash while pursuing a suspect on Saturday morning. This incident occurred around 1:18 a.m. when an officer attempted to initiate a stop on a speeding vehicle on Highway 54.

Officer Carson joined the pursuit in her patrol vehicle, but approximately 30 minutes into the chase, she lost control, veered off the road, and collided with a tree. Unfortunately, her vehicle caught fire upon impact, leading to her death at the scene. She is mourned by her husband and six children, marking a significant loss for her family and the department.

The suspect involved in Officer Carson’s fatal pursuit, identified as 23-year-old Christopher Aaron Bishop Wehmeyer, later crashed his vehicle on State Highway A and was taken into custody. Wehmeyer has been charged under Missouri’s newly enacted Valentine’s law, specifically for aggravated fleeing from law enforcement, which resulted in a death. The Valentine’s law aims to enhance penalties for individuals fleeing from police officers in situations that lead to fatalities.

The passing of Officer Carson is particularly somber as it marks the first line-of-duty death for the Osage Beach Police Department in 30 years. Her dedication and service have drawn condolences from community officials and law enforcement agencies throughout Missouri. In a broader context, Officer Carson’s death highlights a concerning trend in law enforcement: a reported 136% increase in traffic-related fatalities among officers compared to the previous year.
