Traffic jam in Boston with emergency services at the scene of accidents.

News Summary

Boston is currently facing significant traffic delays due to multiple accidents, including a serious rollover on the Massachusetts Turnpike and a crash on Storrow Drive. Emergency services are on the scene, managing the fallout from these incidents, which have caused extensive congestion. Commuters are advised to seek alternative routes, as drive times have increased dramatically. On a more tragic note, a separate incident resulted in a fatality near the Sumner Tunnel, compounding the city’s traffic challenges. Authorities are working diligently to clear the wreckage and restore normalcy.

Boston is experiencing significant traffic disruptions following multiple crashes, including a major incident on Storrow Drive and another on the Massachusetts Turnpike. The traffic congestion that ensued has led to extensive delays for commuters throughout the morning.

On Wednesday morning, a crash involving two cars resulted in severe backups on Boston’s Storrow Drive. One individual was being evaluated for potential injuries by Boston Emergency Medical Services (EMS), although details about the extent of the injuries have not been released. To manage the situation, Massachusetts State Police were dispatched to the scene to direct traffic, but the timeline for clearing the incident remains unclear.

In addition to the Storrow Drive incident, traffic on the Massachusetts Turnpike was heavily affected due to a rollover crash involving a tractor trailer near Allston. This accident occurred shortly before 5 a.m. on the eastbound side of the Mass Pike at Exit 131, which is the Cambridge Street and Storrow Drive exit. Fortunately, authorities reported no life-threatening injuries in this crash. A spokesperson for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) confirmed that the truck leaked fuel during the incident, prompting an immediate response from Boston firefighters who managed the leak’s containment. The truck was removed from the accident site shortly after 9:30 a.m., but the aftermath contributed to ongoing traffic woes.

By just after noon, all lanes in the area were reopened, but the disruption had already extended traffic congestion well past Newton Corner. Drive times from Route 495 in Hopkinton to Boston shot up to approximately an hour and 40 minutes, whereas the normal commute typically lasts between 30 to 45 minutes.

Given the significant delays, drivers were encouraged to seek alternative routes into the city. Options suggested included using Route 9 and utilizing the MBTA commuter rail services. In light of the situation, MassDOT spokesman John Goggin stated that appropriate signage and messaging would be made available to inform drivers of the conditions in the affected areas.

As investigations into the rollover crash on the Mass Pike commenced, no details regarding the circumstances of the accident were immediately available.

In a separate and more tragic incident, an early Friday morning car accident near the Sumner Tunnel resulted in a fatality. This collision occurred at approximately 3:30 a.m. at the junction of the Sumner Tunnel and Interstate 93 north near Government Center. The driver, a man in his 70s, was trapped inside his vehicle with critical injuries and required extraction by first responders. He was subsequently transported to Massachusetts General Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries. The identity of the driver is pending release pending family notification.

This fatal crash also led to lane closures, and traffic heading toward I-93 north/Government Center was rerouted to Storrow Drive. Video footage from the scene captured significant traffic buildup, highlighting the extensive complications caused by the incident.

Adding to the traffic challenges, a separate electric car fire on the Massachusetts Turnpike resulted in further disruptions. The westbound lane at mile marker 133 was blocked, and MassDOT indicated that the closure could prolong for several hours.

These incidents collectively illustrate the ongoing challenges faced by Boston commuters, emphasizing the importance of travel preparedness as road conditions can rapidly change due to accidents and other unforeseen events.
