Held at the Reggie Lewis Center, the fair connected attendees with over 150 employers and resource services, providing essential job readiness support. With plans for additional job fairs, the city is committed to supporting youth employment opportunities and ensuring all Boston Public Schools students can secure jobs.

Boston Youth Jobs and Resource Fair Sees Impressive Turnout Despite Previous Challenges

Boston’s Youth Jobs and Resource Fair brought together over 2,000 young job seekers at the Reggie Lewis Center, connecting them with more than 150 resource services and potential employers. Organized by the city, in collaboration with the Bay State Banner and Roxbury Community College, the event catered to individuals aged 14 to 24 and provided essential support for job readiness.

The fair offered attendees early access to a variety of services, including job application assistance, career development resources, and onboarding workshops. Additionally, young individuals had the unique opportunity to open a bank account on-site, facilitating their transition into the workforce. The summer jobs program is scheduled to run from June 23 to August 29, with an objective to exceed last year’s record of 10,427 employed youth. Currently, over 3,000 young people are already in the onboarding process for summer employment.

Promoting In-Person Connections

Mayor Michelle Wu underscored the significance of in-person attendance, noting that face-to-face interactions with potential employers are invaluable for young job seekers. The fair not only provided a platform for job opportunities but also served as a venue to foster connections and build confidence in the youth participants.

Despite the challenges faced during a previous job fair in March, which had to close early due to fights among attendees, this event was marked by a vibrant atmosphere. Attendees enjoyed music, refreshments, and were entertained by a special appearance from Wally the Green Monster, further enhancing the community spirit of the day.

Supporting Future Employment Opportunities

The city has laid out plans for additional job fairs at various BCYF Community Centers across multiple neighborhoods, aiming to further assist youth in securing employment. This initiative comes as a response to a significant uptick in interest and participation in the youth employment program since the pandemic. Organizers are committed to ensuring that all Boston Public Schools students seeking jobs will have the opportunity to find suitable employment.

Past participants of these job fairs have successfully secured positions in a variety of fields, including law enforcement and legal services, thanks to local organizations that are dedicated to supporting youth career aspirations. The connection between young individuals and employers established at these fairs is crucial for bridging the gap between education and the workforce.

Looking Ahead

As interest in youth employment opportunities continues to grow, the city’s proactive approach to hosting job fairs reflects its commitment to fostering the future workforce. With ongoing support and resources, Boston aims to empower its youth, providing them with the necessary tools for professional success. The successful turnout at this year’s Youth Jobs and Resource Fair sets a positive precedent for future events and offers a hopeful outlook on youth employment in the city.
