Boston, MA – David Picheny, a cherished family man and entrepreneur, passed away recently, leaving behind a legacy of love and laughter. He was born in Brooklyn, New York, and later spent his formative years in Brooklyn and Freeport, New York. Picheny graduated from Baldwin Senior High School in 1965 before earning his undergraduate degree from Northeastern University in 1970.
In 1970, he married Janet Leibowitz, and the couple raised their family in Sharon, Massachusetts. After retiring, they moved to Boston before settling in Longboat Key, Florida. Throughout his life, Picheny showcased an entrepreneurial spirit, particularly through his work with various commissary kitchens and in the food service industry. He notably operated Dandy Food Service in Quincy, Massachusetts, where he supplied meals to Boston Public Schools during the 1980s.
In his 40s, Picheny pursued a new passion by earning his opticianry license, leading him to own two optical shops in Boston’s Back Bay neighborhood. He frequently traveled to both New York City and Milan to stay ahead of the latest fashion trends in eyewear. Building relationships with customers was a priority for him, as he was well-known for his engaging personality and unique ability to make people feel valued.
Despite living with debilitating pain, Picheny maintained a hopeful outlook on life. Known for his emotional nature, he stood firm in his beliefs and brought joy to those around him through humor and a delightful passion for cooking. His family described him as a “girl dad,” deeply devoted to his daughters, Michelle Langille of Manchester-by-the-Sea, Massachusetts, and Marisa Goldberg of Ardsley, New York. He actively participated in their lives, attending sporting events and offering continuous support during their academic journeys and travels abroad.
As a grandfather, he embraced the role of Grampy with great joy, entertaining his grandchildren James, Stella, Addie, and Lyla with goofy stories, games, and quality time spent swimming and fishing. David Picheny is remembered not only for his entrepreneurial ventures but also for the love he shared with his family and friends. He is survived by his daughters, grandchildren, and brother Steven Picheny, who resides in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, and Naples, Florida. He also leaves behind sister- and brother-in-laws Helice Picheny, Sandy Picheny, Bruce Leibowitz, Leslie Leibowitz, Donald Leibowitz, and Robin Leibowitz.
Picheny was preceded in death by his wife Janet, his parents Abe and Miriam Picheny, and his brother Robert Picheny.
