News Summary

A shooting in East Boston on Saturday night resulted in life-threatening injuries for one victim. The Boston Police responded promptly, arresting a suspect linked to the incident. This brings attention to ongoing safety concerns in the community as investigations proceed. In a separate case, police also made a drug-related arrest following a traffic stop, showcasing heightened law enforcement activity in the area.

East Boston

A shooting incident in East Boston on Saturday night has left one victim with life-threatening injuries, prompting a swift police response and subsequent arrest of the suspect.

The incident occurred around 10:43 p.m. when Boston Police reported hearing gunfire near 3 Lewis Mall. Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered a single individual suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The identity of the victim has not been released as of Sunday morning, but Boston EMS transported the victim to a local hospital for treatment.

Following a preliminary investigation, police were able to identify a suspect linked to the shooting. This suspect was subsequently located and arrested at the Maverick Square MBTA Station. During the arrest process, tension escalated as several officers faced assault from the suspect, though fortunately, no officers were injured.

The Boston Police Homicide Detectives are currently conducting an active investigation into the shooting. As details continue to unfold, authorities have urged anyone with additional information to come forward to assist with the ongoing inquiry.

Unrelated Drug Arrest Highlights Police Activity

In an unrelated event, Boston Police made an arrest on Sunday connected to drug offenses. A 27-year-old man, identified as Jose Irizarry-Estepan, was taken into custody following a search warrant that uncovered illegal substances.

Officers monitored Irizarry-Estepan and tracked him to a vehicle on Tremont Street. They noted that the vehicle had a defective brake light and excessively tinted windows, prompting a traffic stop. When searching the vehicle, police discovered eight bags of fentanyl, eight bags of crack cocaine, and two bags of powder cocaine. Additionally, an aluminum foil bag containing crack cocaine and marijuana, along with loose marijuana located in the center console, was seized from the vehicle.

Further complicating the situation, a second passenger in the vehicle was found with a prescription bottle that held crushed blue powder and hydromorphone capsules. Irizarry-Estepan now faces four charges of possession with intent to distribute and is scheduled for arraignment in Roxbury District Court. The second passenger will also face legal proceedings regarding charges of possession of a Class A substance, while the vehicle’s driver received citations for defective equipment and possession of an open container of marijuana.

Immigration and Armed Robbery Arrests

Meanwhile, law enforcement agencies coordinated efforts leading to the arrest of Emerson Esteban Arias-Polanco, who faces armed robbery charges. Initially apprehended by ICE on November 30, 2023, he was indicted on May 3, 2024, for these serious offenses. The suspect was found to be living in the country illegally, and an immigration detainer was lodged against him. However, the Norfolk County House of Corrections declined to honor the detainer, allowing his release.

ICE subsequently criticized this decision. The collaborative efforts of ICE, Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) culminated in Arias-Polanco’s arrest in Boston on March 20, highlighting ongoing efforts to address public safety and illegal activity within the community.

As investigations continue regarding both the shooting and drug arrests, local authorities remain committed to enhancing the safety and integrity of East Boston.
