Boston – A firefighter was hospitalized after a significant fire broke out on the roof of an office building located at 128 Milk St. in Boston’s Financial District on Wednesday afternoon. The incident prompted a swift response from the Boston Fire Department shortly before 2 p.m. when reports of heavy black smoke emanating from the roof began to circulate.
The firefighter, who was already on detail in the downtown area, spotted the smoke and promptly called for backup, leading to the evacuation of office workers within the building. Firefighters had to climb seven stories, utilizing multiple hose lines to battle the blaze effectively.
According to the Boston Fire Department, fire crews managed to extinguish the flames within approximately 15 minutes. Although no civilians were reported injured during the incident, one firefighter did sustain injuries while responding to the fire and was transported to a local hospital for treatment.
Later in the afternoon, around 3:30 p.m., some firefighting crews remained on the scene to conduct thorough inspections for any remaining hot spots on the roof. Major overhauls were performed after the fire was extinguished to ensure that no hidden embers could reignite.
The building at 128 Milk St. also shares its address with 22 Batterymarch St. Witnesses at the scene reported initially hearing the fire alarm and assuming it was a drill until alerted to evacuate by the firefighter who spotted the flames.
