The Ground Round has officially reopened its doors in Shrewsbury, Massachusetts, marking its return after being closed for over 20 years. After a “soft opening” in early April, the restaurant welcomed the public on April 30, 2025, and has already seen an enthusiastic response from the community.
On opening day, approximately 30 patrons eagerly lined up for the 4 p.m. launch, excited to revisit the cherished dining establishment. The new owners, Joseph and Nachi Shea, are dedicated to reviving the beloved restaurant chain that once boasted over 200 locations nationwide.
The refurbishment of the restaurant features a brighter interior, designed to resemble a log cabin, moving away from the darker decor of its predecessor. Notable elements such as complimentary popcorn and the unique “penny-a-pound” scale for children’s meals have made a nostalgic comeback. On Tuesday nights, children’s meals are priced at just one cent per pound of the child’s weight, contingent on the purchase of an adult entrée.
The menu showcases classic American comfort foods, including cheeseburgers, fish and chips, steak tips, and healthier offerings such as turkey wraps. To the delight of returning customers, the restaurant has also reintroduced ice cream served in miniature red baseball helmets, a beloved childhood treat.
Currently, the Ground Round operates for dinner only, from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday through Thursday, extending to 11 p.m. for the bar. On Fridays and Saturdays, dinner is served until 1 a.m. Most early patrons are adults reliving fond memories associated with the original establishment, with many former employees from the original restaurant being hired to provide familiar service.
The community’s response to the reopening has been overwhelmingly positive, with packed dining rooms and high demand for reservations. The Sheas have focused their efforts entirely on the success of the Shrewsbury location and have not announced plans for additional establishments at this time.
