On March 5, 2023, he attempted to open an emergency exit door and assaulted a flight attendant with a broken spoon. Witnesses described his erratic behavior, and he faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. Prosecutors detailed the potential penalties, and United Airlines has since enforced a zero-tolerance policy for violence on flights, emphasizing ongoing concerns about airline safety.
Leominster, Massachusetts – Francisco Severo Torres, a 34-year-old man from Leominster, has pleaded guilty to several charges stemming from a violent incident on United Airlines Flight 2609. The event took place on March 5, 2023, while the flight was en route from Los Angeles to Boston. Torres faces serious legal repercussions for attempting to open an emergency exit door and attacking a flight attendant with a broken metal spoon.
During court proceedings, Torres admitted to interfering with the flight crew by using a dangerous weapon. Approximately 45 minutes prior to landing, an alarm sounded, indicating that a side door had been disarmed. Flight attendants quickly noticed suspicious activity: a flight attendant observed the locking handle being manipulated, and others identified Torres near the door.
Witnesses reported concerning behavior exhibited by Torres during the flight. He was described as erratic, making bizarre statements including claims about his father being Dracula and expressing a desire to be shot for reincarnation. He approached two flight attendants while shouting violent threats, claiming he was “taking over” the plane and threatening the lives of all the men aboard.
The situation escalated when Torres allegedly attempted to stab a flight attendant in the neck with the broken spoon, reportedly striking them three times. Luckily, passengers and crew members managed to subdue Torres, restraining him until law enforcement intervened after the flight landed safely at Boston Logan International Airport.
Authorities reported that there were no injuries among passengers or the flight crew during the incident. Torres was arrested following his arrival at the airport, and due to the gravity of his actions, he could face a maximum sentence of life imprisonment. He is currently scheduled for formal sentencing on July 17, 2025.
In addition to the charges from the flight incident, Torres has a documented history of mental health issues. Prior to the altercation on the flight, he had spent time in mental health facilities and raised concerns about his mental well-being in public. Reports indicate that he declared in a barber shop just one week before the flight that he was “half angel and half devil.” Due to these prior evaluations, a federal judge had previously determined that he was not competent to stand trial and mandated additional mental health treatment.
Following Torres’s guilty plea, prosecutors outlined the potential penalties he faces. The charges carry a maximum sentence of life in prison and a hefty fine of up to $250,000. In light of the incident, United Airlines has implementing a zero-tolerance policy regarding violence on its flights. Furthermore, Torres has been banned from flying with United pending an investigation into the event.
This incident highlights the ongoing concerns regarding airline safety and the behavior of passengers during flights. Instances of violence and threats on airplanes, though relatively rare, call into question the effectiveness of current security measures and the need for continued focus on passenger mental health.
