Drone show at Hingham Bathing Beach for Fourth of July

News Summary

Hingham, Massachusetts is introducing a fireworks drone show for this year’s Fourth of July celebration at Hingham Bathing Beach. This unique event will utilize 300 drones, offering a safe and environmentally friendly alternative to traditional fireworks. Funded by community contributions, the show honors the late Mike Reilly, who cherished community celebrations. Meanwhile, Boston’s renowned Harborfest is set to return with a variety of festivities, including live entertainment and historical reenactments. Other towns across Massachusetts will also have their fireworks displays, highlighting the festive spirit in the region.

Hingham, Massachusetts Prepares for a Unique Fourth of July Celebration

Hingham is set to kick off its Fourth of July celebrations with an innovative fireworks drone show on the evening of July 4. This pioneering event will take place at Hingham Bathing Beach and will feature a spectacular display of 300 drones, marking a significant change from the traditional fireworks displays that have been held in the area. The drone show is designed to provide a festive atmosphere without harming the local environment, particularly the federally protected nesting birds whose habitats are adversely impacted by traditional fireworks.

The drone show is free to attend and will begin at 6 p.m. on Wednesday. This new approach to celebrating Independence Day has been enabled through generous donations from community members, including specific contributions from the Reilly family. Their involvement pays tribute to the late Mike Reilly, who was remembered for his love of fireworks and community gatherings. Nicki Disch, Reilly’s sister, noted that their family has a long-standing tradition of enjoying fireworks together in Hingham.

Boston Harborfest and Other Festivities

In Boston, the iconic Harborfest will return for its 43rd edition, featuring a vibrant lineup of events from noon on July 4 until Friday evening. Harborfest is recognized as one of the largest Fourth of July festivals in the United States, showcasing live entertainment, historical reenactments, and additional celebrations that honor Boston’s rich cultural history.

Additionally, the annual Independence Day celebration on the Esplanade in Boston will feature a special fireworks display accompanied by the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Federal, state, and local officials will hold a press conference at 1 p.m. on July 4 to provide safety guidance for attendees and share concert details.

Community Fireworks Displays

Other cities across Massachusetts are also preparing for fireworks displays on the night of July 4, with communities such as Orleans, Chatham, Foxborough, Cohasset, and Lexington planning their shows to begin at approximately 9 p.m.. A comprehensive list detailing all fireworks displays in the state, along with times and locations, has been made available to the public.

Fireworks Regulations and Safety Concerns

In Massachusetts, personal fireworks are illegal. As a result, celebrations for the Fourth of July predominantly feature professionally organized fireworks displays. The state’s Department of Fire Services reported that from 2019 to 2023, over 200 people were treated for fireworks-related injuries, including 24 severe burns. Moreover, illegal fireworks have led to significant safety issues, causing over 550 fires and explosions in the past five years, resulting in injuries to six firefighters and nearly $1 million in damages.

Massachusetts law requires police to confiscate any illegal fireworks brought into the state from other jurisdictions to ensure public safety during the holiday. The state is set to provide a variety of professional fireworks displays from July 1 through July 6, leading up to Independence Day.

Weather Outlook

Forecasts indicate favorable weather conditions in the latter part of the Fourth of July week, promising an ideal setting for fireworks displays across Massachusetts. Residents and visitors alike can look forward to a joyful celebration of the nation’s independence, filled with unique activities and traditional festivities.
