Boston Welcomes New Lego Headquarters

The Lego Group officially opened its new U.S. headquarters on Thursday at 1001 Boylston Street, Boston. The new office spans 157,000 square feet across six floors and is designed to accommodate over 800 employees in the future.

Lego Group’s CEO emphasized Boston’s status as a vital city for opportunities, learning, and access to a global talent pool. The company announced in 2023 that it would be closing its previous headquarters in Enfield, Connecticut, after half a century of operations there. Some employees have already made the move to Boston, while others will have the option to relocate over the next year.

Support from Local Leaders

Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey praised Lego’s arrival as an important development for the state’s economic competitiveness. She noted the growing need for creative play solutions in an age where there are increasing concerns regarding the impact of technology on youth.

As part of its community commitment, the Lego Group will invest $5 million over the next two years to enhance play access for children in Boston. This initiative includes a partnership with the Boston Public Library, which will provide learning experiences for children up to age 13.

Innovative Office Design

The new office features unique decorations made from Lego bricks, with bins of bricks available for creative use during meetings. The design of the office incorporates elements of Lego’s distinctive “stud and tube” design, including circular lighting and furniture that resembles Lego pieces. Committed to employee well-being, the facility includes amenities such as flexible workspaces, wellness areas, parent rooms, a café, gym access, and stunning panoramic views of the city.

In the lobby, a model referencing Boston Common’s iconic “Make Way for Ducklings” statue displays a wooden toy duck from Lego’s early history. This representation is seen as a symbol of Lego’s commitment to quality.

Future Plans and Transitions

Currently, around 3,500 employees work for Lego in the U.S., along with 150 Lego stores nationwide. The company is also in the process of expanding its operations, with plans to open a new factory and regional distribution center in Virginia by 2027, which is expected to generate an additional 2,000 jobs.

The transition period from Enfield, Connecticut to Boston is scheduled to begin in mid-2025, with completion anticipated by the end of 2026. Approximately 740 employees are currently located at the Enfield office, and each employee has been offered a position in the Boston office. For those who choose not to relocate, Lego has provided financial and job placement assistance.

The opening ceremony of the headquarters was attended by Massachusetts Governor Maura Healey and Boston Mayor Michelle Wu, marking a significant milestone for the Lego Group in its mission to enhance creativity and innovation in play.
