Rideshare vehicle in Somerville at night

News Summary

A Lyft driver was charged with rape and indecent assault after allegedly assaulting a passenger in his vehicle. The driver, Luis Carlos Ramos Teixeira, 27, faces serious legal consequences and has been banned from Lyft. The incident has raised concerns about passenger safety in rideshare services.

Somerville – A Lyft driver has been charged with rape and indecent assault following an incident involving a passenger he reportedly picked up in Boston and drove to Somerville. The driver, Luis Carlos Ramos Teixeira, 27, from Brockton, is accused of sexually assaulting the woman after she entered the vehicle.

The allegations were disclosed by the Middlesex District Attorney, Marian Ryan, during a court hearing in Somerville District Court. Teixeira was arrested on a warrant on Sunday and faces serious legal consequences, being held without bail after his arraignment. He is scheduled to appear in court for a dangerousness hearing on Friday.

The alleged victim reported the assault after seeking medical attention at a hospital. She informed the hospital staff of the incident, which initiated a police investigation. Authorities quickly identified Teixeira as the Lyft driver involved in the case.

The incident reportedly transpired after the woman had been socializing with friends at the Lenox Hotel in Boston. Witnesses indicated that she consumed only two drinks throughout the evening. It was noted that the last clear memory she had was of getting into the back seat of the Lyft vehicle. She later regained consciousness with her head on the driver’s lap and discovered her clothing in disarray—her bra missing and her pants unzipped.

According to court documents, the woman managed to escape from the car after the assault, which lasted over an hour after they arrived at her home. During this time, evidence was gathered including surveillance footage that confirmed the timeline of events, showing Teixeira leaving the vicinity after dropping her off around 4:15 AM.

In response to the allegations, a spokesperson for Lyft condemned Teixeira’s behavior as “reprehensible” and confirmed that he has been permanently banned from the platform. Lyft further expressed their commitment to supporting the victim during this troubling time and stated they would cooperate with law enforcement as the investigation proceeds.

Teixeira, who required a Portuguese translator for the arraignment, pleaded not guilty to all charges. The charges he faces include rape and indecent assault and battery on a person over fourteen, both serious offenses that could result in significant legal repercussions depending on the outcome of the court proceedings.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns regarding passenger safety and driver conduct within rideshare services. Victims of similar situations are urged to report assaults to the authorities and seek support as soon as possible. The legal process will unfold, with further hearings set to determine the next steps for both Teixeira and the victim moving forward.

As the case continues to develop, it underscores the importance of accountability within the ridesharing industry and the necessity for robust measures to ensure the safety of passengers.
