Massachusetts golf courses are achieving new rankings and gaining recognition for their exceptional designs.
Massachusetts has made headlines in the golf community with three public courses being ranked among the nation’s Top 50 for the first time. This milestone signifies the state’s growing reputation as a premier golfing destination, particularly in Cape Cod. The recent rankings have been substantiated by extensive evaluations, highlighting popular golf courses designed by acclaimed architects. Furthermore, the upcoming opening of The Pines Course at The International is set to enhance the state’s golf offerings and commitment to excellence.
Golf enthusiasts, grab your clubs! Massachusetts is making waves in the golf world, achieving an incredible milestone in 2025 with three public courses landing in the national Top 50 rankings for the very first time. This achievement highlights the state’s rising reputation as one of the best golfing destinations in New England, with a spotlight on the picturesque Cape Cod region.
According to a recent evaluation of 84 golf courses across Massachusetts, a whopping 3,057 individual reviews were collected in 2024, showcasing the popularity and pride of local golfers. Among the rankings, the esteemed GolfPass released its annual list of the Top 20 Public Golf Courses in Massachusetts, showcasing a broad range of options for players of all skill levels.
What’s even more exciting is that many of the courses included in this year’s top ranks feature designs from some of the most celebrated golf architects. Legendary designer Donald Ross has had a hand in shaping over one-third of the ranked courses, with three making it into the top 10: the Essex County Club, Salem Country Club, and Worcester Country Club. Elsewhere, the designs of Gil Hanse and Jim Wagner are also recognized, contributing to the accolades with courses like Boston Golf Club, TPC Boston, and Vineyard Golf Club.
Golf lovers, take note! An exciting new course, The Pines Course at The International in Bolton, is on schedule to open in June 2025. This course is undergoing a complete redesign by the acclaimed architects Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw. What sets this new course apart is its emphasis on skill and creativity, moving away from merely designing for sheer length. Instead, The Pines promises a captivating blend of hole lengths and strategies that challenge golfers at every turn.
Players can expect to encounter large, canted greens that not only enhance playability but also provide a variety of strategic options. Using the 007XL bentgrass cultivar, these greens are tailored to thrive in the cooler climate of New England, ensuring top-notch turf quality for all visiting golfers.
Since its acquisition by Escalante Golf in 2021, The International has seen a tremendous investment exceeding $40 million. This commitment to excellence doesn’t stop at just the course. Future plans also include the construction of member cottages and a new clubhouse, adding even more value to this thrilling golf destination.
As for the golf experience in Massachusetts? Recent reviews rave about various courses, emphasizing their well-maintained conditions, the friendliness of staff, and the overall excitement of the golfing experience. Golfers have expressed appreciation for the unique layouts and challenging designs offered across the state, while the range of facilities available has been a highlight for many.
With so many fantastic options to choose from, Massachusetts is not just a place to play golf: it’s a haven of golfing adventures waiting to be explored. Whether you’re a seasoned pro or just picking up a club for the first time, the Bay State has something special in store for every golfer!
