The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has announced the closure of its Institute Community and Equity Office (ICEO). This decision follows an extensive review process initiated by the former vice president for equity and inclusion. Despite the closure, MIT will continue core DEI programs under different university offices. A new Standing Institute Committee is being established to enhance community collaboration, emphasizing a local-first approach to inclusion efforts. The university reaffirms its commitment to diversity and an inclusive campus environment amidst evolving national pressures on DEI initiatives.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) has officially announced the closure of its Institute Community and Equity Office (ICEO). This decision, described by MIT President Sally Kornbluth as “sunsetting” the office, comes after a comprehensive assessment that began nearly 18 months ago.
Kornbluth reiterated the university’s commitment to attracting exceptionally talented individuals from diverse backgrounds, emphasizing that although the ICEO is closing, core programs associated with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) will continue to operate under different offices within the university framework. The role of vice president for equity and inclusion will also be eliminated as part of this restructuring.
The reassessment process was initiated in January 2024 when the former vice president for equity and inclusion, Karl Reid, began an internal review of the ICEO’s efficacy. Reid stepped down in February 2025, after which a working group comprised of senior faculty and staff conducted further evaluations. This group reported significant appreciation for existing programs but expressed a strong desire to rethink how these efforts are conducted moving forward.
In response to the feedback from the working group, MIT plans to establish a new Standing Institute Committee aimed at promoting community building and collaboration, with a notable emphasis on a “local-first” approach to initiatives. The university intends to clarify the responsibilities of those tasked with focusing on community and belonging efforts, seeking to ensure coordinated collaboration between human resources and local leaders.
Furthermore, Kornbluth has directed the Chancellor and her team to improve access for students to university leadership, reinforcing MIT’s commitment to a welcoming and inclusive environment. MIT remains focused on fostering an inclusive campus free from discrimination and harassment.
The decision to close the ICEO occurs amid broader financial and political pressures affecting DEI initiatives across the nation. Notably, MIT had previously distinguished itself as the first institution of its caliber to remove diversity pledges from its hiring and admissions processes. Such changes have surfaced against the backdrop of ongoing tensions between the Trump administration and other academic institutions, including Harvard University, which has faced calls to cut federal funding connected to DEI initiatives.
Despite the timing of these developments, university spokespeople have clarified that the reassessment and subsequent decision to close the ICEO were not directly tied to the political disputes surrounding Harvard’s DEI practices.
Other universities in Massachusetts, such as Northeastern University, have similarly restructured their DEI initiatives in response to the evolving landscape of financial and political pressures focused on diversity and inclusion efforts.
As MIT transitions away from the ICEO, the institution’s leadership indicates that it will continue striving to enhance community and belonging within the campus, with a commitment to maintaining an inclusive atmosphere that supports individuals from all backgrounds.
