Motor City Golf Club prepares to join the innovative TGL league in Detroit.
Detroit’s Motor City Golf Club becomes the seventh team in Tiger Woods’ innovative indoor golf league, TGL. Set to launch in 2027, the ownership group includes notable figures like Sheila Ford Hamp and Rob Walton. This exciting development aims to honor Detroit’s vibrant sports culture while connecting with the community. With TGL’s unique format and blend of technology and entertainment, sports fans are left enthusiastic about the future of golf in Detroit.
Detroit, the heart of the automotive world, adds another feather to its cap with the announcement of the Motor City Golf Club (MCGC) becoming the seventh team in Tiger Woods’ innovative indoor golf league, TGL. This new venture is set to swing into action in 2027, which will already mark the third season for TGL—just in time for golf enthusiasts to enjoy a fresh, engaging format of the beloved game.
The ownership team making this happen is led by Middle West Partners, featuring a powerhouse trio: Michael Hamp, Peter Hamp, and Kevin Kelleher. But that’s not all! Detroit is well-represented with Sheila Ford Hamp, the principal owner of the Detroit Lions, and her husband, Steve Hamp, stepping in as co-owners. To say that this ownership group is a diverse bunch would be an understatement!
Other notable co-owners include big names such as Rob Walton, the owner of the Denver Broncos, and Jordan Rose, the president of Rose Law Group. There’s also Kit Hawkins and Vansa Chatikavanij from Present Ventures, Kal Somani, a technology entrepreneur and co-owner of Rajasthan Royals in the IPL, alongside Ronin Capital Partners, headed by former Rocket CEO Jay Farner.
As the ownership group puts together the pieces of MCGC, they express the desire to tap into their connections in the Detroit community. The goal is to represent the essence of Detroit’s vibrant sports culture within the TGL. The team’s formation is not just about golf; it’s about community, pride, and history, with a specific nod to honouring the memory of an avid golfer, William Clay Ford Sr.
TGL, co-founded by golf legends Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, aims to bring a modern spin to the sport. Currently, TGL consists of six other teams: Atlanta Drive GC, Boston Common Golf, Jupiter Links Golf Club, Los Angeles Golf Club, New York Golf Club, and The Bay Golf Club. All teams are set to compete out of the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, aiming to meld technology and entertainment with the traditional elements of golf.
Detroit has been buzzing with sports energy lately, with the Lions clinching back-to-back NFC North titles, the Pistons advancing in the NBA playoffs for the first time since 2008, and the Tigers gunning for an AL Central title for the first time since 2014. This new addition to the sporting scene only emphasizes the city’s sports resurgence and the loyalty of its fanbase.
Does Detroit have what it takes to make a mark in the TGL? That’s the question on everyone’s lips. The inaugural TGL Championship saw Atlanta Drive GC take the title with a superstar lineup featuring names like Justin Thomas and Patrick Cantlay. The interest in TGL has already sparked discussions around potential expansion for other cities looking to join the league, like Dallas and Chicago.
As MCGC gears up for its debut in 2027, sports fans in Detroit are left buzzing with excitement and anticipation. It’s a promising time for Detroit sports, and it seems that the future just keeps getting brighter. So, here’s to swinging into a whole new world of golf—and showcasing Detroit on another big stage.
