Play Airlines aircraft flying towards warmer destinations.
Play Airlines has announced it will cease all flights to the U.S., with the last services from Boston and New York scheduled for September. This strategic move comes as the airline shifts focus towards profitability and leisure travel destinations, particularly from Iceland to warmer climates in Europe. The decision is influenced by competitive pressure within the U.S. market and a plan to lease aircraft to enhance operational flexibility. As Play exits, Arajet will begin operating flights from Boston to the Dominican Republic, offering new affordable travel options.
Boston – Play Airlines has announced the cessation of all its flights to the United States, with the last flights scheduled for September and October of this year. The final flight from Boston Logan International Airport (BOS) will depart on September 15, while services from New York Stewart International Airport (SWF) will end with a flight on September 1, and Baltimore/Washington International Airport (BWI) will see its last service on October 24. This decision comes as part of a strategic overhaul initiated in response to pressure from two of the airline’s largest shareholders.
Play Airlines, which emerged following the collapse of WOW Air, has experienced difficulties in the U.S. market primarily due to an oversaturated competitive landscape. Rather than expanding rapidly, the airline struggled to maintain its routes, leading to the decision to withdraw from the American market entirely. To address profitability, the airline will also reduce its operations within Europe, shifting its focus towards leisure travel destinations from Iceland to warmer climates.
As part of its new strategy, the airline plans to prioritize affordable flights originating from Iceland to sunny locations such as Spain, Portugal, Morocco, Croatia, and Turkey, thereby easing its extensive network of transatlantic flights to the U.S. Play Airlines is also expected to operate under a Maltese Air Operator Certificate rather than its current Icelandic designation. This change is anticipated to facilitate operational flexibility and align with its revised business model.
CEO Einar Örn Ólafsson has highlighted a commitment to fostering competition within the aviation sector as the airline prepares to realign its services. Additionally, Play Airlines plans to lease six of its ten aircraft to SkyUp Malta Airlines, further enhancing its goal to improve profitability amid ongoing challenges. The airline’s strategy shift indicates a significant reduction in its Northern European destination offerings, as it pivots to cater predominantly to leisure travelers seeking sun-soaked holiday experiences.
In light of Play Airlines’ exit from the U.S. market, Arajet, the Dominican Republic’s flagship carrier, is set to fill some of the gap. Starting from November 20, Arajet will launch flights from Logan Airport to Santo Domingo, offering four direct flights weekly on Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays. Prices for these flights are expected to start at $170 one-way, providing affordable travel options for families in the greater Boston area.
Play Airlines was established in July 2019 and commenced its transatlantic services in 2022. Despite its intentions to provide budget-friendly options between the East Coast and mainland Europe—charging for additional services and allowing passengers to book stayovers in Iceland for up to 10 days—the competition has ramped up considerably. Airlines such as Delta Air Lines, JetBlue, TAP Air, and Allegiant have introduced new routes from Logan Airport since late April, amplifying the competitive pressure faced by Play Airlines in an already challenging market.
Given these developments, the landscape of low-cost transatlantic travel remains dynamic, with established and emerging players vying for market share. While Play Airlines’ abrupt exit signifies the challenges of recent years, the introduction of competing carriers like Arajet presents new opportunities for travelers seeking economical flight options in the future.
