Plymouth and Fort Myers Mourn the Loss of a Cherished Community Member, William “Bill” Collins
Residents of Plymouth and Fort Myers are coming together to celebrate the life of a beloved community member, William “Bill” Collins, who passed away peacefully at the age of 77 on Saturday, June 28, 2025. Surrounded by his loving family in the comfort of his home, Bill’s departure has left a profound void in the hearts of many.
A Life Richly Lived
Bill Collins, known for his warmth and generosity, leaves behind his wife of 53 years, Dr. Anne Collins (née Sullivan), and two sons, Tim and his wife Sarah Young from East Greenwich, Rhode Island, and Steve and his wife Kelly Manning from Hingham, Massachusetts. He was also a proud grandfather to five bright stars: Abby, Emma, Seamus, Jackson, and Hunter. Sadly, he was preceded in death by two infant sons, a loss that shaped the man he became.
Passions and Pursuits
Born and raised in Forest Hills, Bill had a life full of passions that painted his story. His love for sports, especially baseball and golf, defined much of his youth. Whether you spotted him with a baseball glove or by the golf course, he was always ready for an adventure. Bill took his skills to the competitive level, playing in the Boston Park League, and he even achieved a single-digit handicap in golf, boasting multiple club championships under his belt. However, what truly set him apart was his relentless passion for teaching others these beloved sports.
Education and a Unique Journey
Bill’s educational journey began at Boston College High School, leading him to St. Mary’s University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, where he has left behind some legendary tales. One of his most remarkable stories includes joining the Royal Canadian Air Force as a student, showcasing his adventurous spirit. During his time in Canada, he enjoyed the thrill of singing on stage alongside famed Canadian singer Anne Murray, and he’d frequently hitchhike to Boston just to visit Anne, his future wife.
Service to Country and Community
Bill’s dedication extended beyond his family and sports; he served his country in the Army National Guard, embodying the spirit of service. Later on, he spent a commendable 25 years with the MBTA, rising through the ranks as an operator, supervisor, and station master. His commitment to community was evident, as he took on roles such as Scoutmaster for BSA Troop 117 in Weymouth, coached youth baseball, and even held elected positions in local government.
Final Farewell
The community is invited to pay their respects during visiting hours, which will be held on Wednesday, July 9, from 4-7 PM at Sullivan Funeral Home in Hanover. Friends and family are encouraged to gather and celebrate Bill’s life through shared memories and stories. A Funeral Mass will follow on Thursday, July 10, at 9:00 AM at Our Lady of the Angel’s Parish (St. Mary’s) in Hanover. After the service, Bill will be laid to rest at St. Joseph’s Cemetery in West Roxbury, where he will be honored for his legacy.
Remembering Bill
In lieu of flowers, Bill’s family suggests donations be made to the Francis Ouimet Scholarship Fund or BSA Troop 1 in Hingham, as a way to honor his spirit of giving and service to future generations. Online condolences can be left in an accessible guestbook at www.sullivanfuneralhomes.com.
