The interior of the Rite Aid store in Clinton, now permanently closed.
Rite Aid has announced the permanent closure of its Clinton, Massachusetts store at 1031 Main St as part of its bankruptcy restructuring efforts. This decision reflects the company’s broader move to reduce operations nationwide amidst substantial financial difficulties, with plans to close approximately half of its locations. Despite this, Rite Aid will continue to offer pharmacy services at remaining stores. The closure of the Clinton store leaves only three operational Rite Aid locations in Massachusetts as the company works to regain stability following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filings.
Clinton, Massachusetts – Rite Aid has announced the permanent closure of its store located at 1031 Main St in Clinton as part of its ongoing bankruptcy process. This closure is just one of many as the company works to restructure its operations nationwide following substantial financial difficulties.
The Pennsylvania-based pharmacy chain filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy for the first time in October 2023, and a subsequent filing occurred in May 2025. The latter filing indicates that Rite Aid is now liquidating a significant portion of its assets, marking a decisive move in its effort to regain stability and financial viability.
As of May 2025, Rite Aid officials communicated that all locations in Massachusetts would either be sold or closed. In alignment with this strategy, the Clinton store’s closure represents another step in the gradual winding down of operations within the state. After this closure, only three Rite Aid stores will remain operational in Massachusetts, located in Fall River, New Bedford, and Greenfield.
Nationally, Rite Aid is targeting closure for approximately half of its 1,240 locations. The company faces a staggering $2 billion in debt, raising concerns for employees regarding potential job cuts as financial pressures mount. Despite these challenges, Rite Aid has assured its customers that pharmacy services, including access to prescriptions and immunizations, will continue to be available, both in-store and online at the remaining locations.
To ease the transition for customers affected by the store closures, Rite Aid is implementing measures to facilitate the smooth transfer of prescriptions to other pharmacies. This initiative aims to minimize disruption for customers who rely on Rite Aid for their medication needs.
As Rite Aid navigates this reorganization, it has also announced significant changes to its customer loyalty program. Rite Aid Rewards points will no longer be issued, and any existing points and bonus cash will expire according to set terms and conditions. Additionally, customers will not be able to use gift cards or make returns and exchanges starting June 5.
Since initiating its bankruptcy proceedings in late 2023, Rite Aid has closed over 800 stores, which includes more than a dozen in New England. The store closures are not limited to the Clinton location, as past closures in Massachusetts have also affected stores in Webster and Revere. Currently, there are 70 operational Rite Aid locations remaining in New England: 13 in Connecticut, four in Massachusetts, 48 in New Hampshire, and five in Vermont.
As Rite Aid seeks to navigate through this financial turmoil, the company is hoping to secure $1.94 billion in financing from existing lenders to support its bankruptcy processes and facilitate potential asset sales. A letter sent to customers from Rite Aid emphasized that the current Chapter 11 proceedings represent the “only viable path forward” for the company, highlighting the urgency of the situation.
The decisions made during this bankruptcy process will significantly impact Rite Aid’s operations and its ability to serve customers moving forward. The company’s goal is to salvage pharmacy services and preserve as many jobs as possible during this challenging transition.
