Hartford, Connecticut — Smithland Pet & Garden Centers, which previously operated under the names myAgway and Dave’s Soda and Pet City, has announced the closure of all 13 of its locations across Connecticut and Western Massachusetts. This marks the end of a 40-year tradition for the community favorite that has served pet and gardening needs since its inception in 1985.

The closures will affect locations in Connecticut, including Bethel, Manchester, Middlefield, North Branford, North Haven, Old Saybrook, and Southington. Massachusetts locations include Agawam, Hadley, Ludlow, Northampton, Ware, and Westfield. The decision to shutter all stores was deemed difficult yet necessary by the business, which has fostered strong connections within the local communities throughout its long tenure.

In light of the impending closures, Smithland Pet & Garden Centers has commenced store closing sales, which began on Tuesday. These sales feature substantial markdowns on a wide range of products, allowing customers to take advantage of discounts in the final days of operation. The closing sales will be managed in collaboration with Hilco Consumer-Retail. All discounts are available exclusively in-store, as online purchases have been suspended.

Starting May 6, all sales will be final for items purchased, while returns for products bought before this date will be accepted with a receipt until May 20. As of May 6, the acceptance of checks for purchases will cease. The Smithland rewards program, a popular offering among customers, will also come to an end on May 12. Furthermore, gift cards will not be sold after May 5, though they can still be redeemed for purchases.

In addition to merchandise, store fixtures and equipment will be made available for sale during the closing events. The business has expressed heartfelt gratitude to its customers, their pets, and local neighbors for their unwavering support over the years, while noting that the community connections fostered will be dearly missed.

Smithland Pet & Garden Centers has played a significant role in the local economy, becoming a trusted source for pet supplies, gardening products, lawn care items, and outdoor living essentials throughout its operational history. It has been recognized for its commitment to customer service and community involvement, leading to a loyal customer base that will feel the impact of the closures.

Founded in 1985, Smithland initially focused on providing a wide array of products tailored for pets and gardens. Over the years, it adapted to the changing needs and preferences of its clientele, ranging from amateur gardeners to dedicated pet owners. As Smithland wraps up its journey, it leaves behind a legacy of service and dedication that has enriched the lives of many in the surrounding regions.

The closure of Smithland Pet & Garden Centers is a poignant moment for the community, marking the end of an era where pets and gardens flourished side by side.
