New York City – Sonya Hamlin, a pioneering television host and respected communications consultant, passed away at the age of 101. Hamlin’s death marks the end of a remarkable life dedicated to changing the landscape of television and empowering women in the communications field.

Born Sonya Borenstein on October 14, 1923, in New York City, Hamlin was raised in the Bronx. The daughter of Jewish immigrants from Poland, she was inspired by her parents, Julius and Sarah Borenstein, who were active in their community. A gifted student, Hamlin began her studies at New York University at the young age of 15, skipping several grades due to her academic abilities.

In 1970, Hamlin launched a groundbreaking television show titled “For Women Today” on WBZ-TV, which later evolved into The Sonya Hamlin Show. The program became a staple in New England, earning the title of the region’s longest-running TV talk show during her five-year tenure. Notably, Hamlin’s show was produced by the first-ever all-women staff in television, reflecting her commitment to creating alternative programming for women and challenging traditional stereotypes.

Throughout her successful career, Hamlin achieved significant milestones in television. Her program was renowned for airing the first natural childbirth broadcast, showcasing her innovative approach to content creation. In addition to her pioneering work in Boston, she hosted a second talk show on WCVB-TV and later became a sought-after communications consultant for corporate leaders and lawyers, helping them enhance their communication skills.

Hamlin’s impact extended beyond television hosting. She taught a seminar at Boston University’s medical school focused on communication with dying patients, addressing a critical aspect of healthcare. Her expertise in communication also earned her a place in the Massachusetts Broadcasters Hall of Fame in 2009. Furthermore, she was recognized as New England’s broadcasting personality of the year in 1972 and received multiple Emmy nominations, including for her documentary titled “China: A Different Path.”

After the passing of her husband, Bruce Hamlin, in 1977, Sonya continued her professional journey, but she previously had opted to keep her career private due to societal expectations around gender roles at the time. Her determination to break through these barriers and mentor others, especially women, signified her legacy as a strong advocate for female empowerment in media and communication.

In addition to her television and consulting work, Hamlin authored several books, including “How to Talk So People Listen: Connecting in Today’s Workplace,” which provided insightful guidance on effective communication. She was known for her deep, thoughtful interview style, taking the time to prepare thoroughly for her guests.

Hamlin is survived by her sons, David and Ross, and six grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Bruce, and her son, Mark. A public service was held in her honor, celebrating her life and the indelible impact she made in the fields of television and communication. Her legacy as a mentor and trailblazer will continue to inspire future generations.
