Boston Plan to Close Charlestown High Goes to School Committee

BOSTON, Mass. — Boston Public Schools Superintendent Mary Skipper brings a new round of proposed school closures to the Boston School Committee on Wednesday, a plan that would shut Charlestown High School along with two smaller schools as the district shrinks to match falling enrollment.

Two other schools are on the list. Greater Egleston, the Jamaica Plain alternative high school, enrolls just 76 students. The East Boston Early Education Center would be merged into the McKay K-8 next door. Its pre-K classrooms would stay in place, and current students would be guaranteed seats at McKay.

The committee is expected to vote Dec. 2. The bulk of the changes would not kick in until the end of June 2028. If approved, the district would be down to 97 schools, close to its goal of running about 95 by 2030.

Charlestown High has drawn the loudest pushback. District figures show its senior class has 205 students while its seventh grade has only 48, and nearly 80% of its students live outside Charlestown, many in Dorchester and Roxbury. Officials said a new secondary school would move into the building as early as the 2028-29 school year, and Mayor Michelle Wu said the site would not sit empty.

The plan also moves Boston International High School and Newcomers Academy and Boston Adult Technical Academy into 11 Charles St., the former Cleveland school in Fields Corner, for 2027-28. Boston Green Academy would relocate to 95 G St. in South Boston after renovations.

Separately, the Hurley and Kilmer schools would become pre-K through grade 6, while Boston Arts Academy and Fenway High would add grades 7 and 8.
