BOSTON, Mass. — A Boston woman is due in court Monday on a manslaughter charge, two months after her 4-year-old daughter died from fentanyl inside the family’s Dorchester apartment.
Boston police arrested the girl’s mother, 35-year-old Familia, over the weekend. The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office identified the child as Liyanna Bautista Familia and says the girl’s death came from swallowing the drug.
The Boston Police Department says officers, EMTs and paramedics were called to an apartment on Fuller Street, near Milton Avenue, at about 8:50 p.m. on an August evening. They found the girl unresponsive and in cardiac arrest. She was taken to Children’s Hospital and pronounced dead there.
A medical examiner later ruled that acute fentanyl intoxication caused her death. Court records show police got a warrant for the mother’s arrest on Oct. 16, and the department’s fugitive unit picked her up Saturday morning on Eastbrook Road in Dedham.
Beyond manslaughter, police list charges of possessing Class A drugs, destroying evidence and intentionally misleading an investigator. She is set to be arraigned Monday in municipal court, where the four counts will be formally read.
The girl’s death drew a lengthy investigation before any charge was filed. Investigators waited on the medical examiner’s ruling on the cause of death, then went to court for the warrant in mid-October. It took the fugitive unit about a week after that to find and arrest the mother outside the city.
In sequence, first responders found the child in cardiac arrest on a mid-August night, a hospital team was unable to save her, the medical examiner tied her death to fentanyl, a warrant followed on Oct. 16, and the arrest came Saturday in Dedham.
The Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office is prosecuting the case, and the Boston Police Department led the investigation that produced the warrant.
